The construction of this Gothic edifice lasted 6 centuries, beginning in 1273 and ending in the late 19th century. The beauty of the Gothic flamboyant Saint John portal is magnified by the cathedral's nocturnal ligthing. Inside the cathedral is a richly adorned Renaissance-style jube. This edifice is one of the rare Gothic monuments south of the river Vienne. A series of excavations took place in the summer of 2005 and an expeptional baptistry, one of France's largest examples, was discovered, at the foot of the cathedral. In order to enhance this prestigious edifice, it is in the process of being listed as a Historical Monument.
